about

The PHUSICOS NBS simulation is a multiplayer browser-based, online simulation that focuses on the challenges related to the implementation of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) for disaster risk reduction.

In the simulation, participants take on multiple stakeholder roles with unique values, worldviews, and interests. Different solutions to reduce risk are presented to the players, who discuss the options taking into consideration a variety of nature-based solutions, co-benefits and potential trade-offs.

The simulation places emphasis on the negotiations that occur between stakeholders during the decision-making process to implement nature-based solutions or alternative solutions.

Why nature-based solutions?

Nature-based solutions are cost-effective measures for climate adaptation, biodiversity and risk mitigation that are inspired by nature and supported by natural processes. They not only reduce risks from extreme weather events, but they have co-benefits that promote sustainable development goals.

The PHUSICOS NBS simulation demonstrates the benefits of NBS while aiming to capture the complex governance settings in which decisions on gray- and green disaster risk reduction solutions are discussed, negotiated, funded and implemented.

How does the PHUSICOS NBS Simulation work?

The PHUSICOS NBS Simulation was created for the use of networks of NBS experts, practitioners, as well as stakeholders,, decision-makers, and business representatives.

Participants & Roles

Players have the opportunity to prioritize problems, plan and implement solutions, and solve conflicts via negotiations and dialogue. Together, they creatively experiment and test risk reduction options, after which they instantly receive feedback on the outcomes of their decisions.

Real world testing

The tool simulates the governance setting in which NBS solutions are discussed and negotiated amongst stakeholders who have varying interests and worldviews.

Challenging

Participants leave their comfort zone and step into someone else’s shoes.

Real world testing

Role playing enables players to experience a situation where often opposing worldviews and goals are represented.

Participatory

Socio-ecological social simulations, or serious games, are a participatory process where a group of participants collectively explore a complex reality and complex challenges.

How to play the simulation?

The webinar hosted by the PHUSICOS Project gives an overview of the PHUSICOS NBS Simulation. It explains how social simulations offer a practical participatory approach where participants collectively engage with complex challenges and realities, serving as valuable learning tools. It also presents the objectives of the PHUSICOS NBS Simulation and demonstrates how to moderate the game.
